Last night I was able to get Simon & Garfunkel in the same picture for the first time. It's not the best quality photo as I had to brighten it a lot to be able to see Garfunkel properly (it was in a dark hallway) but I wanted to include it anyway as I find it to be quite historical! Plus the strange lighting is fitting since it is Halloween:

Simon went on a road trip with us last week and we got some nice photos of him in the car. Unlike most cats he seems to actually enjoy being in the car during road trips. We don't have to keep him restrained or in a box or anything. He spent most of the time in the car just napping away.

Here are the photos of Simon from the road trip. Some we took out side of the car while we were in a parking lot and he was inside and some others we took while on the road!

I've got quite a few more pics of him on the road that I really like so I'll save the others for another day! I wouldn't want you to have Simon overload or anything.

While I was searching for a way to help Simon & Garfunkel get along I came across this: Veterinary Secrets Revealed.

I downloaded the free digital book and it's pretty interesting although not really related to helping two cats get along. I'll have to keep on looking for stuff about that!

The digital book does have a cool thing about how to put together your own pet first aid kit.

I haven't decided yet whether to purchase the calming spray from yesterday. I found another calming solution today that is quiet a bit cheaper:

Richard's Organics Pet Calm (2 oz.)

Richard's Organics Pet Calm (2 oz.) - Purchase From PetCo

I think we need to try something like this because Simon & Garfunkel are still having a hard time getting along. Sometimes it will seem like they are making progress and then a big fight will break out.

I still have no pictures videos of Simon & Garfunkel together yet. They're not getting along very well so far. Simon is very aggressive towards Garfunkel. It's tough watching them be so mean to each other when they are so nice to us when they are one on one!

I'm considering buying this comfort zone spray for cats to see if I can calm them down while they are out together. Anyone use this stuff for this purpose (getting two cats to get along and get used to each other) and can let me know how it works?

Garfunkel's next vet appointment is to get his Calici virus boosters in a couple of weeks. This is a two step process and we'll have to take him back again after that!

What's the Calici virus? It's a virus that causes cat flu. Cat flu symptoms can include fever, sneezing, inflamed eyes, and discharges from the nose. It can also make them lose their appetite for both food and water. Although these effects are quite bad, cat flu rarely results in death although it is possible when the flu coupled with pneumonia.

Another effect of getting the cat flu is that a cat may be prone to having colds for the rest of his life.

I was sent this message from Meagan who is an active member of that cat forum (she uses the name olly y loki there.)

Loki is a 5 month old Abyssinian kitten that we've had for about 2 and a half months. we tried everything we could to get things to work out, but my mau Olly simply refused to allow it to happen. obviously we couldn't keep them separated forever, so tonight Loki had to go back into foster care until he is adopted. it was so hard to let him go. it's easy to get attached even in a short time. i really want the best for him and hope he ends up in the best home possible.

if anyone in the Wisconsin/Illinois area is interested, they can go to purebredcatrescue.org (he doesn't appear to be posted yet on the site but he will be soon). and then the adoption application must be filled out, after which Kirsten will write back soon..

Loki is a delightful boy that never stops playing. he's about 5 or 6 pounds, neutered, and NOT declawed.. he's never been around dogs, but older respectful children would be ok. it's hard to say, at this point, how well he would do with another cat. it might need to be another kitten as sadly, my Olly may have made him afraid. he obviously can't live with a domineering, bully cat. he is rather assertive himself. he is ruddy with gold eyes and a cute ringed tail, and i love him and miss him already!

As I've been writing, we've been taking Garfunkel to the vet a lot to get him up to date with all of his shots and neutered and the bills are really adding up fast! I've already spent over $400 at the vet on him. It's adding up so fast that I'm actually considering checking into Cat Health Insurance. If you have health insurance for your pets leave a comment about how it has worked for you.

Garfunkel got neutered today and when I picked him up the vet's office told me to use
Yesterday's News Cat Litter
for at least the next 7 days because it's softer. I hadn't bought this before but the packaging makes it seem very cool (of course it does, right?) Leave a comment if you have had experience with this type of litter.

You can buy it online by clicking on the picture below:

We took Simon with us on a little trip and he stayed with us at the HOTEL (I may do a listing of pet friendly hotels at some point, good idea?)

Among the curious things Simon did during his stay at the hotel was crawl up under the bed. Hard to explain exactly what I mean but... I took some pictures:

Hello everyone! I don't know if you'll all remember me or not, my name is Hobo and my pop wrote the story "Doesn't Anyone Care?" about how he and my mama rescued me after I'd been abandoned.

Anyway, I wanted to come back and tell you how I've been doing since then. Purr-fectly cat-tastic in everyway! My folks refer to me as their "miracle kitten" because within one week of their taking me home with them I grew strong and healthy. I actually started getting fat!
My broken leg healed up completely and I now run and play with the other kittens of the Kenney Clan. And spoiled! Oh, it's simply heaven for me! I get all the love and attention a kitten could ask for!

I like to keep myself full, so, I eat all day long. If you've ever gone weeks without eating, you'll understand...I don't ever want to experience hunger again. Of course, even my life isn't all cat food and cream! There is Macintosh to avoid at every opportunity! What's that? ... Who is Macintosh, you ask?

Oh, sorry, where are my manners? Goodness! He's the family Giant Schnauzer and although he means well he tends to get just a wee bit carried away with all of us cats and kittens! How so?...Well, he chases us for one thing. It's just awful! I'm here to tell you that you haven't lived until you've been chased by a dog that's the size of a horse!

Shoot, even pop refers to him as "The Scottish Pony." That's bad! He also likes to drop a paw down on top of our necks if he catches us. I don't know what in the world pinning us down does for him but he seems to enjoy it...we've all learned to "play dead". He loses interest then and moves his paw so we can run for cover!

Other times he'll put our heads in his mouth! Oh, of course just one at a time but...what in the world is that all about? Beats me! But then he is a dog, so, I guess, I shouldn't expect much from him. (They're not very bright, you know!)

We have other Schnauzers in the family but they're all smaller. I think they're known as "Miniature" ... is that the right word for it? Anyway, they're a lot nicer to all of us cats and kittens.

So, I guess that about sums up my life...I'm very loved and very happy. I don't care too much for strangers. We cats have learned to be wary of strangers...it's just not a safe world, anymore, you know?

So, take care of yourselves and if you don't already share your life with God's greatest creation... the cat... do go right out and adopt yourself to one!

We all need a human to pamper and worship us!

Most Sincerely,
Hobo Kenney-Kitten

P.S. If my life ever becomes more exciting, I'll definitely come back and tell you about it, okay? So, don't stray far!

I don't know you, nor will I ever. I avoid strangers and am even cool to my own family because it's my nature. I am a good mother and a peaceful soul, just a wee bit indifferent towards the world. Life started out harshly for my sister and I, our father was never around and our mother, God rest her soul, did the best she could without any help from anyone.

So, I learned early about the coldness of the world and set my heart accordingly. I go my own way and snatch happiness from where I can. My children are grown and no longer need me. We meet in passing each day and nothing more. I enjoy morning walks around the neighborhood, while the community awakes from slumber and leaves me to my own thoughts.

My sister is my complete opposite; warm, friendly and pleasant to everyone, I suspect because of fate. You see, our folks adopted her before me and filled her emptiness with love and warmth. I waited much longer and so endured many more days of hunger and loneliness.

I need to be held and cuddled, just like everyone else; I just don't typically go looking for it. Rather, I wait for it to be offered and then respond with cool indifference. It's my protection, you see, from rejection.

I guess my heart is fragile and is afraid of being broken. People say that one never gets over a deep emotional wound and mine began after birth. But I manage. I cope with the everyday hurts without complaint. I keep my scars hidden from the rest of the world and suffer in silence.

My folks are truly wonderful and I love them dearly. They know and understand me and let me go my own way.

They rescued me from a certain death and for that I'm forever grateful. Their love for me is complete and genuine, I couldn't ask for more.

I guess that about wraps it up for me; I've nothing more to say. If you ever meet someone who is homeless, I hope you'll open your hearts and homes to them and take them in from the coldness of the world. Most certainly, they will not only open their hearts to you in return but will stand by you for the rest of their lives.
Signed,
Miss O'Reilley Kenney-Cat

We took Garfunkel to the vet this morning and we found out that he is FIV and FeLV free. We also got a urinalysis done which we haven't got the results back from yet. "Simonsmom" just gave him a bath too!

We're very happy that Garfunkel appears to be rather healthy for a cat just picked up off the streets. We're happy even though the vet bill was over $250!

We got some new things for the cats from PetCo in Manhattan today. If I get the chance I'll take some photos of the cats trying them out!

You may remember that earlier this year (in May) we were trying to help find a place to live for a cat named Negra. Check out this post from May 2nd.

Happily Negra ended up finding a home with Sowilu (meet her in the cat forum)

But sadly Sowilu let us know in the cat forum that Negra was hit and killed by a car.

This post is in remembrance of Negra who lived a tough life with her injured leg and by spending much of her life as a stray. But in her way she was also charmed. She birthed a beautiful kitten and she lived a happy life with Sowilu after her rescue.

It's also to give a thank you to Sowilu (from cat lovers everywhere) for taking care of Negra for the past 5 months. It's nice that Negra was taken in and given a good life for a period even if it was so tragically shortened.

Rest In Peace Negra

We have a new cat and his name is Garfunkel. We found him today on the sidewalk just a few blocks away from our apartment. He was a stray cat who apparently had been outside in front of a church for the past week or so (a kind man told us.) He was very friendly for a stray making us think that he hasn't been a stray for that long.

Physically, he has an issue with one of his eyes but otherwise he seems healthy although somewhat thin. We're taking him to the vet tomorrow to get him checked out and get him all of his shots and everything that he may need.

So far we've been keeping Simon separated from Garfunkel as we are trying to ease them in to meeting each other. Simon has been a solo cat his whole life (he's 2) so he seems a bit agitated at smelling another cat's scent in the house, we're hoping that they get used to each other and become best of friends (and perhaps record a hit album or two.) Garfunkel has been dealing with all kinds of things living on the street so he doesn't seem concerned about Simon's scent being in the house at all.

So here's Garfunkel for the first time. You're seeing him before Simon does! In these photos he's laying in a bed that we bought for Simon but he never uses because he's too big for it. It fits Garfunkel perfectly!

I lay dying on the sidewalk. No one cared. I heard the sound of voices and footsteps of passersby all around me, yet no one stopped. Vehicles zoomed by creating small dust clouds which further crippled my fluid-filled, diseased lungs. Small bubbles of pus formed at my nostrils with every exhale. I gasped for breath thinking that each would be my last. My right eye was thickly coated with mucus; the eyeball itself badly swollen. My belly seized with cramps from starvation, it had been weeks since my last meal. Yes, I ached for death, for relief from such torment, let it end soon.

Suddenly, you were there, tenderly lifting my lifeless, limp body. You cradled me in your arms until we'd reached safety and warmth. You offered me food which I barely chewed, only wanting to fill my ravaged belly. I gulped offered water until I couldn't hold anymore. After each kindness I managed to whisper "thank you", my voice failing completely. I basked in the warmth of the cloth you wiped my sore eyes with, again mouthing "thank you."

As you turned now to leave me to rest in a soft warm bed, I cried out to you begging "please don't leave me my friend!" But you smiled warmly and promised that you wouldn't be far away and that at last I was safe. "You'll never go hungry again, little one, no one will ever abandon you, hurt you or leave you for dead. We'll call you "Hobo" and you'll be loved." Still weak and in pain I managed a faint meow ... "thank you, my friend!"

This is the true story about our newest member of the family. He is doing great and is spoiled rotten!
