"Mutation Cat Breeds" refer to cat breeds that have not been bred for a very long time and are based on one striking, unusual, hereditary characteristic. The simplest way of thinking about it is that a genetic mutation can occur and then a new cat breed may be based on that mutation by breeding the cat with the mutation. Sometimes it's a single cat that is the basis of a new cat breed in this way but usually the breed will be based on a group of cats with a similar mutation.
Today's Thursday 13 is a list of 13 of these mutation cat breeds. I'm also linking to a cat blog for a cat of that breed when I can find one. If you have a cat blog for a cat with one of these breeds leave a comment here and I'll edit you in!
Excellent list! I have to correct you about the Sphynx though. Sphynx are distinct from Mexican hairless. The Mexican hairless cats actually died out and became extinct. Many years later, hairless cats suddenly appeared in a few places, including Toronto, Canada. For that reason, the Sphynx is known as the Canadian Sphynx in some places, to distinguish it from other, separate hairless breeds that have been developed since (ie. the Don Sphynx.)
Thanks so much for the link. :) All of the breeds you listed are wonderful and beautiful. :)
Ah yes, Thank you dragonheart I will edit that to make it more clear - I didnt mean it to sound like they are direct decedents of the mexican hairless cat... just that hairless cats used to be called mexican hairless. Of course many of these "mutation breeds" are hairless... ah I'm confusing myself now. Interestingly I'm finding sphynx spelled differently depending on where I look... According to my cat encyclopedia it's with an i but other places it's with a y?
and i'm still hoping to find some more blogs to link to in this post... i looked around and couldnt find any more cat blogs that were cat breeds on this list... ah... maybe next time :)
Thanks so much for the link. :) All of the breeds you listed are wonderful and beautiful. :)
